Having just concluded another “Re-imagining Community” gathering at One Design, I am taken aback by something I noticed yesterday.
A friend was showing me an apple gadget that lets you connect and know where other gadgets are. And I was amazed to see how “technology” and devices are connecting to other technologies and building a growing “community”. They are literally “talking to each other”, and figuring a way out to know where others are and how to connect; They KNOW that connecting with each other is important for their own growth.
And just how IMPORTANT this is to the sustainability and its relevance in the ecosystem of their users. Smart, indeed.
A phone can no longer “just be a phone”. It has to adapt to learn to understand how to be a camera, a diary a music system etc. It can no longer continue to be stuck in its “original identity”. And so it has to respond to the evolving nature of its ecosystem and community.
Technology has become so ubiquitous, that we can’t even see what it is doing and learning and being everyday. For example, Some devices as soon as you enter the house “talk to” the lights, fridge and other things. I can’t help but reflect on what we do as people.
The connection between the devices is what is making the digital word grow. And thrive. And change the way the world works.
The Decision to opt in or out of products or services is increasingly a decision about if you want to opt in or out of society

The question is are they getting smarter because they are connected? Or are the connecting because they are smart. And..
Are we seeing this??
