On the back of a fulfilling session on Application of Design thinking and Innovation for Organisational sustainability, for IIT Delhi, with my friend Krishna, I came across this amazing Film “Beyond Zero”.

It opens with the a Bold statement by Ray Anderson, “In the Future, People Like Me Will Go to Jail”. It made me sit up and take notice immediately. It’s a topic close to my soul.

Ray Anderson is founder, chairman, and CEO of Interface, the $1-billion-a-year leader in this unglamorous sector of the floor-covering industry. And he is on a mission to clean up American businesses–starting with his own.

Take a look at : https://beyondzerofilm.com/

“Beyond Zero is a fascinating story, not only about inspirational and visionary founder Ray Anderson, but the struggles and determination of a company trying to become a positive force in the world.  The film delivers a message that needs to be told: In the end it indeed boils down to people, and business can be more successful and resilient, simply by doing the right thing.” –

Paul Polman, Former CEO of Unilever and member of the board, United Nations Global Compact

It made me think of what it means to Build a Sustainable Lifestyle, Enterprise, Life, Relationships, Community. Perhaps it starts with taking a good long look at

What is  “Our Quest”.

Is the quest :

  1. Large enough to make us feel Humble
  2. Honest enough to make us have Conviction
  3. Personal enough to make us feel Courageous
  4. Sustainable enough to make us want to think about our future generations.

Perhaps these Four questions are for all of us. In the way we live our own lives, what quest are we on, Is it sustainable, are we pushing things under the carpet. And who all are, and will continue to  pay a price for this. And how long are we going to continue to deny our own souls.

“Theft of our children’s future should be a crime”, Ray implores. It give me goose bumps. Because it is true. We may not, in our life time see the end of the quest, and maybe that is why it is so Important. We are already not able to hold Generation x y or z to account. But maybe we are also not willing to be Accountable to them. When my son talks, I have to make sure I am on the edge, curious, as I listen or try to. He is the voice of that future that is coming and fast.

We live as if we will live forever. And Maybe we will. It’s a scary thought. Or atleast our choices will. Even if we don’t see them.

Perhaps it time to go beyond Zero. Maybe it’s time to NOT push things under the Carpet. Anymore.

Earth

I will scream from the rooftops;
And you will adjust your earphones.

I will go in yet again;
And you will continue the conversation.

I will tell you have trampled my heart;
And you will look at your shoes in wonder.

I will bring destruction sometimes;
And you will make a movie about it.

I will tell you of my soil erosion;
And you will make gods out of it.

I will get stained many times, from all the blood ;
And you will sing a National Anthem

I will stand in front of you ablaze;
And you will say you smell smoke.

Until……
